Employed!
*Gah* So many Cheese, So little Sharon!
Guess what guys? I'm currently working part-time now! Hehe, oh wow.. the piggie is in action! Whereabouts, did you say? There is this greek shop and warehouse in Westend on Duncan street and it is called Hellenes Shop. do feel free to drop by and say hi to lil ol me aight :P
Here's a little insight to the history of Hellenes. In Latin literature, Hellenes is the name by which Greeks are known. During the Roman era, and especially after Christianity became the official religion of the empire, the name Hellene came to be associated with the pre-Christian religion, and fell out of use. The Greeks, who were now citizens of the Roman Empire, called themselves Roman, or Rhomaioi.
After the independence of the modern Greek state from the Ottoman Empire, the term Greek was abandoned totally by the Greeks themselves. The new country was officially named "Hellenic republic" (or Hellas) and the people Hellenes. In many countries the modern Hellenes are called Greeks and their country Greece, while in other countries, especially in Asia, they are called Yunan and their country Yunanistan, from the word "yunan" which in Turkish means "infidel" because greeks are overwhelmingly christians. "Yunan" comes from the word "Ionian" which was a type of Greek people.
One thing that annoys the shit outta me about working there is that I do not know how to speak Greek or understand the language. The older customers come in and they always ask for the manager when being served as I cannot communicate with them in Greek. I can understand this because if I were to look back at the times I accompanied my mom to those Chinese grocery shops in Malaysia, Mom would always ask the lady serving us which veges were fresh or which fish tasted better if steamed. If we changed the situation around, and a Greek lady was serving us, Mom would probably just grab whatever she needed and left. So I guess when I'm looking after the shop, the customers who couldn't speak English very well couldn't ask me which olives tasted better, or if the Figs marmalade tasted better than this other jam. -_-
Another thing is that I do not know my cheese :p Be it the Olympus fresh Ricatto cheese or Romano cheese or many other more, I would smile and kindly ask them to point to me which cheese they wanted, pretending that I had the whole situation covered. In fact, I was panicking inside, thinking to myself... what the hell, isn't cheese just cheese? How do I know how to slice a 300grams portion?!
I only work two days a week, from 930am to 530pm. Lets hope that by the end of the month, I'd be able to differentiate my cheese and olives!
